An 1880 portrait of John Beattie, one of the owners of Beattie Quarry Co. in Leete's Island. Beattie was originally from Scotland. He moved to the US and later established the quarry company that employed as many as 300 workers at its height. The company is best known as the supplier of the granite used for the base of the Statue of Liberty.
